• Clean twice daily with sterile saline spray. Spray directly on to the front and back of the earring, leave for 30 seconds, and pat dry with clean tissue. Do not rotate the earring, as this can tear healing tissue.
• Keep hair away from the earring during sleep and when washing hair. Hair pulling on a fresh piercing is one of the most common causes of irritation.
• Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and the sea for 6 to 8 weeks. Chlorinated and open water introduces bacteria directly into a healing wound.
• No touching. Children naturally want to feel the earring. A gentle daily reminder matters enormously in the first few weeks.
• Do not change the earring before 8 to 12 weeks. The channel needs to be fully healed before jewellery is swapped. Changing too early is the most common cause of piercing failure in children.
